Parent Teacher Organization

This is an attempt to clarify the function of the PTO, or Parent Teacher Organization, of Manarah Islamic Academy.

We understand that it is not always clear what the PTO does or where all that fundraising money ends up or what it’s even for; so, insha Allah, this is to let everyone know that what we’ve been up to.

If you still have any questions about what the PTO does, its function, or use of donations, please feel free to ask.

The primary purpose of the Parent-Teacher Organization, or PTO, is to provide enriching experiences for the children of Manarah Islamic Academy through a variety of events and activities and to raise money to fund these events and activities, often in conjuction with our esteemed teachers. In the past, some of these included:

  • The recent Dodgeball Competition
  • The Book Fair, held twice a year.
  • The Science Fair
  • Last year’s Deen Show
  • The Opening Ceremony
  • Annual Field Day
  • Graduation
  • Eid activities
  • Monthly Hot Lunches
  • Bake Sales
  • Field Trips

So far this year we have been dreadfully low on volunteers and donations. Hot lunches require much donations and preparations. The book Fair, in particular, can be very tricky to ‘man’ as the classes come out throughout the day and multiple people are needed to serve them quickly to minimize the disruption of the school day.

Alhamduliliah, we had a wonderful group of parents at the last bake sale and a decent turn out for the Book fair. We give thanks for those who have lended a hand and /or donated generously throughout the year. You can continue to help this year by sending in Boxtops, signing up to volunteer, or donating needed items.

There is often a significant amount of planning and volunteer work involved in running and organizing these events, especially the fundraising for them (because everything costs money these days). The book fair, bake sales and hot lunches are our primary source of revenue to support these activities and other events through the year.

So where does all that money go? The PTO has historically paid for the transportation for all field trips. It has provided supplies for the above listed events. For example, during last spring’s field day the PTO provided t-shirts and art supplies for all of the children. Doughnuts with Dad, Muffins with Mom, and Star Students’ breakfasts are funded by PTO. Items used in the Opening Ceremony, including the manarah Lighthouse and Lion mascot costume, were also provided by PTO. Last year, the PTO helped to fund one of the school’s computer carts. In addition, the PTO provides treats and enriching activities throughout the year.
